Tree Work

That's what we do. Brittania Tree Care carries out tree surgery and removal for homes and businesses across Darlington and the wider North East, from a single overgrown tree in a back garden to larger removals on commercial sites. Every job is quoted in writing before we start, and every job is cleared up properly before we leave.

If a tree on your property has become a problem, whether it's grown too big, is blocking light, is putting pressure on a fence or a roof, or has simply reached the point where it needs to come down, you want someone who knows what they're doing and won't leave you with a mess or a bill you weren't expecting.

01

Full Tree Removal

Sometimes a tree simply has to come out. It might be dead, diseased, dangerously close to a building, or just in the wrong place for what you're planning to do with the garden. Whatever the reason, full removal is a job that needs to be done properly, not rushed.

We assess the tree, the access, and anything nearby that needs protecting, whether that's a greenhouse, a garage roof, or next door's fence, before a chainsaw comes anywhere near it. Larger trees are usually dismantled in sections rather than felled in one go, especially in gardens where there isn't room to drop a whole tree safely. Every bit of timber and brash is taken away unless you'd rather we left logs for firewood, in which case just say so when you book.

Stumps are a separate job (see below), so let us know at the quote stage if you want the stump ground out at the same time.

02

Crown Reduction

Crown reduction means taking the overall size of the tree down, reducing the spread and height of the branches while keeping the tree's natural shape intact. It's the go-to option when a tree has outgrown its space, is casting too much shade, or is getting close to a house, wall, or overhead cable, but you want to keep the tree rather than remove it.

Done properly, a reduction shouldn't leave a tree looking hacked about or unbalanced. We work to the standards set out in BS 3998, the British Standard covering tree work (more on that below), which means cutting back to the right points on the branch structure so the tree heals cleanly and keeps a natural shape, rather than leaving stubs that die back or regrow as weak, top-heavy growth.

03

Crown Lifting

Crown lifting is about raising the height of the lowest branches, usually to clear a driveway, a path, a pavement, or a fence line, or simply to let more light into a garden or a room that's been shaded out. It's a common job for trees near driveways or gates where low branches are catching on vans, or for gardens where a tree has thickened out at head height over the years.

We take into account the tree's natural shape and its long-term health when deciding how much to lift, since removing too much of the lower crown in one go can stress a tree unnecessarily.

04

Crown Thinning

Thinning means selectively removing some of the smaller branches through the crown to let more light and air through, without changing the overall size or shape of the tree. It's often used where a tree is casting heavy, dense shade over a lawn or a patio, or where wind resistance needs reducing on a tree that's grown thick and top-heavy.

It's a more subtle job than reduction or lifting, and it's easy to overdo. Taken too far, thinning can leave a tree looking sparse and stressed, so we're careful to remove growth evenly and never strip out more than the tree can comfortably manage.

05

Deadwooding

Dead branches don't heal, don't regrow, and eventually come down on their own, often without much warning. Deadwooding is the removal of dead, dying, or damaged wood from the crown of the tree, and it's one of the most straightforward ways to make a tree safer without changing how it looks.

It's particularly worth doing for trees near where people park, sit, or walk underneath regularly, and for trees overhanging a neighbouring garden, where a falling branch becomes your problem twice over.

06

What About the Stump?

Felling a tree doesn't deal with the stump left behind, and it's not something we leave you to sort out yourself. We can grind stumps down below ground level as part of the same visit, or come back separately if you've had a tree removed elsewhere and just need the stump dealt with. See our Stump Grinding page for the full details.

07

Working to BS 3998

BS 3998 is the British Standard for tree work, covering how operations like reduction, lifting, thinning, and deadwooding should be carried out so that a tree heals well and stays healthy afterwards. In practice, it means cuts are made at the right point on the branch, the amount removed at any one time is judged against what the tree can cope with, and the tree's natural shape and structure are respected rather than just cut back to a size.

It's the difference between tree surgery and someone with a chainsaw taking the easy option. Working to this standard is part of why customers come back to us for the next job, and why they're happy to recommend us to a neighbour.

Why Darlington Customers Choose Us

We're a team-based operation, not one person with a ladder and a chainsaw, which means the right equipment and enough hands to do a job safely and in good time. Every quote is given in writing before we start, so there are no surprises on the day, and every site is left clean and tidy, arisings taken away, before we consider a job finished.

We work across Darlington and out into Durham, Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough, Newton Aycliffe, Bishop Auckland, Northallerton, Hartlepool, Sedgefield, Barnard Castle, Richmond, and Yarm, for both domestic and commercial customers.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need permission to remove or prune a tree?

It depends on the tree. Some trees are protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO), and trees in conservation areas can also have restrictions, even without a specific TPO. If you're not sure, tell us the address when you get in touch and we can advise, or check with Darlington Borough Council's planning department before any work goes ahead.

How much does tree surgery cost in Darlington?

It varies a lot depending on the size of the tree, access, and the type of work needed. That's why we always visit and give a fixed price in writing rather than quoting blind over the phone. The visit and quote don't cost anything, and there's no obligation to go ahead.

Will you take the wood away?

Yes, all arisings are removed as standard. If you'd like logs left for firewood, just mention it when you book and we'll sort it accordingly.

Can you grind the stump on the same visit as the removal?

Often, yes, if it's included in the original quote. Stump grinders need reasonable access though, so let us know about gates, side entrances, or tight spaces when you get in touch so we can plan for it.

How quickly can you come out?

For planned work we'll usually book you in within a week or two depending on the season. If a tree has come down or is causing an immediate hazard, see our Emergency Tree Work page, we offer same-day and out-of-hours callouts for exactly that situation.

Give us a call or drop a photo over on WhatsApp and we'll let you know what's involved. We visit, assess the tree properly, and give you a fixed price in writing, no charge for the visit and no obligation to go ahead.
