Tree Work

We carry out stump grinding for homeowners, landlords, and businesses across Darlington and the North East, whether it's one stump left over from a removal job or several across a site that needs clearing.

A tree coming down doesn't get rid of the stump. Whatever's left in the ground carries on doing what tree roots do, throwing up suckers, catching a mower blade, and sitting there as a lump you have to work the garden around. If you're planning to lay a patio, turf over the area, or just want it gone for good, grinding is the way to do it properly.

01

What Stump Grinding Actually Involves

A stump grinder is a machine with a rotating cutting wheel that chews the stump and the top of the root plate down into wood chip, working down below ground level rather than just flush with the surface. How deep we go depends on what you're doing with the area afterwards. If you're planning to lay a patio, path, or driveway, we'll grind deeper and more thoroughly than if you're simply turfing over.

The chippings from the stump are usually left in the hole and can be used as a base layer under turf or as mulch elsewhere in the garden, or we can remove them if you'd rather have the area left clear. Either way, we let you know what to expect before we start.

02

Why Grinding Beats Digging a Stump Out

Digging a stump out by hand or with an excavator means disturbing a much bigger area of ground, and on established trees the root system can extend well beyond the trunk, undermining paving, foundations, and services nearby if you're not careful. Grinding deals with the stump itself without the wider disruption, and it's quicker, which usually makes it the more cost-effective option too.

The one thing grinding doesn't do is remove every root in the ground. Larger structural roots running outward from the stump will still be there, they just won't be actively growing anymore once the stump's gone. If those larger roots are a specific problem, for example if they're affecting a driveway or a drain, that's a separate job, see our Root Removal & Root Barrier Installation page.

03

Stumps of Any Size

Small ornamental trees, large mature stumps left over from a full removal, multiple stumps across a garden or a commercial site, we're equipped for all of it. Larger stumps simply take longer and cost more, which is reflected in the quote, but there's nothing we turn away on size alone.

If you've had a tree taken down by someone else and been left with the stump, that's a common call we get, and we're happy to quote for the stump on its own without needing to have done the original removal.

04

Access Matters

Stump grinders are heavy machines, and while smaller versions can get through a standard side gate, tight access, steps, or a stump tucked away behind other planting can affect how we approach the job or what size of machine we bring. Mention gates, gaps, and anything else that might be in the way when you get in touch, so we can plan for it properly rather than turning up and finding out on the day.

05

Getting the Ground Ready for What's Next

Most people grinding a stump have a plan for the space afterwards, whether that's a new lawn, a patio, a border, or simply somewhere for the kids or the dog to have a bit more room. It's worth telling us what you've got planned when you book, since the depth and thoroughness we grind to can vary depending on whether you're turfing over lightly or preparing a base for a paved area that needs to bear weight for years to come. Getting this conversation right at the quote stage saves any surprises once the ground has settled and you're ready to move on to the next job.

06

A Common Add-On Job

Stump grinding is one of the jobs we're most often asked to do alongside something else, a hedge that's being reshaped at the same time, a general garden tidy-up, or a full clearance where several old stumps have been sitting around for years. If you've got more than one job in mind, mention it when you get in touch and we can quote for everything together, which is usually more efficient than booking separate visits.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does stump grinding take?

Most domestic stumps are done within an hour or two. Larger stumps, multiple stumps, or difficult access can take longer, which we'll factor into the quote.

Will the roots regrow?

Once the stump and the growing point are ground out, the tree can't regenerate from that location. Some species can occasionally throw up the odd sucker from a surviving lateral root some distance from the stump, though this is uncommon and easily dealt with if it happens.

Can I turf or pave over it straight away?

Once we've ground below the level you need, the area can usually be turfed within a short time. For paving or a patio, the ground needs to settle and be properly prepared first, we can advise on timing based on what you've got planned.

What happens to the wood chip?

We can leave it in place as a base fill, or take it away if you'd rather the area was left clear, just let us know your preference.

Do I need permission to grind a stump if the tree was protected?

Removing a stump doesn't generally raise the same concerns as felling a living tree, since the tree is already down, but if you're unsure whether the original tree was covered by a Tree Preservation Order or sat within a conservation area, it's worth checking with Darlington Borough Council before any ground disturbance work goes ahead.

Can you grind a stump on the same day as removing the tree?

Often, yes, if it's agreed at the quote stage. Let us know when you book if you want the stump dealt with at the same time.

Give us a call or send a photo over WhatsApp and we'll tell you what's involved. Free, no-obligation visits, and a fixed price in writing before anything happens.
