Grounds

We carry out lawn treatments for gardens and grounds across Darlington and the North East, from a single seasonal treatment to a full renovation programme for a lawn that's really struggling.

Cutting a lawn regularly keeps it under control, but it doesn't fix a lawn that's thin, patchy, full of moss, or struggling with weeds no amount of mowing seems to touch. That takes a different kind of attention, treatments that deal with what's happening at soil level and within the grass itself, not just what's visible on top.

01

Scarification

Scarification removes thatch, the layer of dead grass, moss, and organic debris that builds up at the base of the grass over time and stops water, air, and nutrients getting down to the roots properly. A lawn that looks patchy or spongy underfoot, or that's developed a lot of moss despite regular mowing, is usually carrying more thatch than it should. Scarifying pulls this layer out, and while a lawn often looks worse immediately afterwards, thinner and more bare in places, this is normal and it recovers well with the right follow-up care.

02

Aeration

Compacted soil, common on lawns that get regular foot traffic, restricts root growth and stops water draining and nutrients penetrating properly, leaving grass shallow-rooted and more prone to stress in dry or wet weather. Aeration involves spiking or coring the lawn to relieve this compaction, letting air, water, and nutrients reach the root zone more effectively. It's often done alongside scarification as part of a wider autumn renovation, since the two work well together.

03

Feeding

A proper feeding programme, matched to the time of year, supports healthy growth without pushing excessive soft, leafy growth that then struggles through summer stress or winter cold. Spring and autumn feeds generally have different balances of nutrients for a reason, spring feeds support strong growth as the season gets going, while autumn feeds are usually lower in nitrogen and support root development and winter hardiness instead.

04

Weed Control

Persistent lawn weeds, clover, dandelions, plantain, and similar broadleaf weeds, are usually a sign that the grass itself isn't thick and healthy enough to outcompete them, alongside whatever's allowing the weeds to establish in the first place. Targeted treatment deals with what's there now, but a genuinely thick, well-fed lawn is also the best long-term defence against weeds re-establishing.

05

Turfing and Reseeding

Where a lawn is beyond what treatment alone can fix, badly worn areas, patches that never recovered from a previous problem, or simply starting from bare soil, turfing gives an instant result while reseeding is more cost-effective and, done at the right time of year, gives a more uniform result once established. We can advise on which suits your situation and timeline better.

06

Building a Treatment Programme

Rather than a single fix, most lawns benefit from a programme spread across the year, an early spring feed to support growth as the season starts, weed control as needed through summer, and scarification and aeration in early autumn to reset the lawn for the following year. We can put together a programme suited to your specific lawn rather than a one-size-fits-all schedule, since a lawn on heavy clay with drainage problems needs a different priority order to one that's mostly struggling with shade or general thinning.

07

Shade and Difficult Areas

Some lawn problems come down to conditions treatment alone can't fully fix, heavy shade under trees being the most common, where grass simply won't thicken up the way it does in open sun no matter how well it's fed. In these situations we'll be upfront about what treatment can realistically achieve, and where a shaded, thin area might be better suited to a different solution entirely, such as ground cover planting or artificial grass, see our Artificial Grass Installation page if that's worth considering for a particularly difficult spot.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

When's the best time for scarification and aeration?

Early autumn is generally the best window, when the soil's still warm enough for recovery but the heaviest summer growth pressure has passed, giving the lawn time to recover before winter. Spring can also work but tends to give the grass more competition from weeds and other growth while it's recovering.

Will my lawn look worse after treatment?

Often yes, immediately after scarification in particular, since it deliberately strips out thatch and can leave the lawn looking thin and bare for a short period. This is a normal part of the process, not a sign anything's gone wrong, and recovery is generally quick with the right follow-up feeding and watering.

Do I need to do anything after a treatment?

Following our advice on watering and avoiding heavy use for a short period after treatments like scarification or overseeding gives the lawn the best chance to recover and establish properly.

Can you treat a lawn that's mostly moss?

Yes, though it's worth understanding why moss has taken hold, poor drainage, compaction, shade, or low soil fertility are common causes, since treating the moss without addressing the underlying cause tends to mean it comes back.

Is turfing or reseeding better for my lawn?

Turfing gives a near-instant, ready-to-use lawn at a higher cost, reseeding is more cost-effective and often gives excellent results but needs the right season and a bit of patience while it establishes. We can advise based on your timeline and budget.

Do lawn treatments work on any soil type?

Underlying soil type affects how a lawn responds, heavy clay drains poorly and often needs more focus on aeration, while sandy soils drain quickly and can need more attention to feeding and moisture retention. We take soil conditions into account when recommending a programme rather than applying the same approach everywhere.

Tell us what your lawn's struggling with, moss, thinning, patchy growth, and we'll assess it properly and recommend the right treatment plan.
