Hard Landscaping & Other

We supply firewood, logs, and wood chip mulch across Darlington and the North East, much of it sourced directly from tree work we've carried out locally.

Every tree we take down or reduce produces timber, and rather than seeing it go to waste, we make good use of it, seasoned firewood for wood burners and open fires, and wood chip that can be used as mulch in beds and borders. If you're after logs for the coming season or mulch for the garden, it's worth asking us directly rather than buying in from elsewhere.

01

Firewood and Log Supply

Wood that's freshly cut can hold well over half its weight in water, and burning it in that state wastes much of the heat simply boiling off moisture rather than warming the room, while producing more smoke and creosote build-up in the chimney or flue. Since May 2021, firewood sold in England in loads under 2 cubic metres legally has to be certified "Ready to Burn," meaning it's been verified at 20% moisture content or less. Properly seasoned hardwood typically takes somewhere in the region of eighteen months to two years to reach this point when air-dried under cover, softwood considerably less.

We can supply logs at various stages, freshly cut if you're happy to season them yourself over time and have the storage space to do it properly, or seasoned and ready to burn if you want fuel you can use straight away. If you'd like logs left over from a tree removal job we're doing for you, just say so when you book, we're happy to leave them rather than taking everything away.

02

Wood Chipping and Mulch

Branches and smaller timber from tree and hedge work get chipped rather than wasted, and the resulting wood chip makes a genuinely useful mulch, suppressing weeds, retaining moisture in the soil beneath, and gradually breaking down to add organic matter back into beds and borders. Fresh chip is best used on paths and areas not immediately next to young or tender plants, since freshly chipped wood can draw nitrogen from the surrounding soil as it starts to break down, while well-rotted or aged chip is gentler and more suited to use right up against planting.

03

Getting the Right Storage

Firewood, however well seasoned when it arrives, needs proper storage to stay that way, off the ground, under cover, and with reasonable airflow around it rather than stacked tight against a wall with no ventilation. We're happy to advise on storage if you're new to burning wood, since even well-seasoned logs left out in the wet will pick moisture back up and burn poorly.

04

Species and Burn Quality

Different timber species burn differently, denser hardwoods like oak and ash generally give a longer, hotter burn than softer woods, while faster-burning softwoods are useful for getting a fire going quickly but burn through faster. Where possible we can let you know what species you're getting, since a mixed load from varied tree work often gives a good balance of both.

Coverage Across the North East

We supply firewood, logs, and wood chip mulch across Darlington and into Durham, Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough, Newton Aycliffe, Bishop Auckland, Northallerton, Hartlepool, Sedgefield, Barnard Castle, Richmond, and Yarm.

05

Quantities and Ordering Ahead

Firewood demand naturally picks up through autumn, so ordering ahead of the coldest months rather than waiting until you're already through your existing stock generally means better availability and more choice on quantity and species. We can also arrange a standing seasonal order if you'd rather not think about it fresh each year.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if firewood is properly seasoned?

Ready to Burn certified wood has been independently verified at 20% moisture or below. As a rough guide without a moisture meter, well-seasoned logs are noticeably lighter than green wood, have visible cracks or splits at the cut ends, and make a sharper, hollower sound when knocked together rather than a dull thud.

Can I get logs left over from tree work you're doing at my property?

Yes, just let us know when you book and we'll leave suitable timber for you rather than removing it as arisings.

How much wood chip mulch do I need for my borders?

Depends on the area and how deep you want the layer, a typical mulch depth for weed suppression and moisture retention is around 5 to 7.5cm. We can advise on quantity once we know the area involved.

Is fresh wood chip safe to use straight on my plants?

It's better used on paths or areas without tender young planting nearby, since fresh chip can temporarily draw nitrogen from the soil as it breaks down. Aged or well-rotted chip is gentler and more suitable close to planting.

Do you deliver firewood and mulch, or is it collection only?

We can arrange delivery locally, get in touch with quantities and we'll confirm what's practical.

Can I get a mix of firewood species rather than just one type?

Yes, most of what we supply comes from varied local tree work, so mixed loads are normal and often give a good balance of quick-lighting and long-burning wood in the same delivery.

Do you supply kindling alongside logs?

We can arrange this on request, worth mentioning when you place an order if you'd like it included.

Whether you need firewood for the season, mulch for the garden, or want to keep timber from a tree job we're already doing for you, get in touch and we'll sort it out.
